There’s something you should know about me: I made AMAZING homemade pizza. Ah-mazing.

I make my own dough with double-zero flour and let it sit in the fridge for a long ferment. I use a pizza steel, which gets waaaaaaay hotter than a pizza stone, and I’m able to replicate a crispy, wood-fired pizza crust at home.

I use a peel to carefully slide my ‘za in and out of the oven, and carefully slice up my pizza with a sharp AF pizza wheel. Trust me when I say you would be a damn fool if you ever turned down an invite to pizza night at my house.

You guys… this is not that pizza.

Nope, this is whats-for-dinner-on-a-weeknight, hangry kids, tired mom, need something on the table in less time that it takes to watch an episode of Daniel Tiger kind of pizza.

This is Naan Pizza, slapped together with store bought ingredients, customizable with toppings that your kids will actually eat, and a fancied-up Margherita Flatbread for yourself.

This Naan Pizza is good, it is comfort food, and it is healthy enough. It’s what’s for dinner tonight, so no complaining, you hear me?

What do I need to make Naan Pizza?

We’re keeping this ingredients list short and simple. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Naan bread –> Or another store-bought flatbread is fine too.
  • Pizza sauce –> I used store-bought, but you can totally make homemade pizza sauce if you want.
  • Cheese –> A ball of fresh mozzarella is what I used here, but feel free to grab a bag of pre-shredded mozz.
  • Tomatoes –> I used these semi-dried tomatoes and they are soooooo good on a margherita flatbread.
  • Fresh basil –> My kid freaks out about “leaves” on his food, so this is totes optional.

How do you make Naan Pizza?

Throw the kids in front of the iPad, pour yourself a big ol’ glass of wine and fire up your oven. I got you, momma.

Step 1: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. This is 100% optional, but will make cleanup a cinch. Pre-heat your oven to around 200°C / 400°F.

Step 2: Place your naan bread on the baking sheet and spread with pizza sauce. Top with semi-dried tomatoes and cheese.

Step 4: Bake your margherita flatbread for 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is nice and bubbly on top.

Step 5: Slice your naan pizza like a boss. Top with fresh basil if desired.

Dinner is done.

Where can I buy naan bread?

Typically you can find naan bread either in the bakery section or ethnic aisle of your grocery store. If you can’t find naan, don’t despair! You can absolutely substitute another type of flatbread.

To make this margherita flatbread I like using naan, pita, or even homemade flatbreads too. My friend Cassie from Cook It Real Good makes these Easy Yoghurt Flatbreads using her two-ingredient dough

It’s also fun to use flatbreads of different sizes! I found mini naan which is perfect for the kids, though I used the full-sized ones in these photos.

What toppings are best for naan pizza?

The best toppings are your favourite toppings.

I’m a minimalist when it comes to pizza toppings, so just a bit of good cheese and some semi-dried tomatoes and I’m good to go. If you prefer to add ALL the toppings, you do you.

Can you make Naan Pizza in advance?

I mean, you can, but you really don’t have to since these come together so quickly.

If you wanted to get the tomatoes pre-roasted as part of your weekly batch cooking effort, I’d fully support that. Heck, you can even pre-shred the cheese.

You could even assemble the naan pizzas and then throw the tray into the fridge or the freezer until you’re ready for them. Sarah from Sustainable Cooks has a recipe for Homemade Frozen Pizza to make your life easier.

Hey Nutrition Lady, is pizza healthy?

Your pizza is as healthy as what you put on it, my friends. Load it up with tons of cheese and greasy, salty meat then it’s certainly not a health food. If you can find a whole grain pizza crust and top it with lots of vegetables it’ll be a whole heck of a lot better for you.

I think that pizza gets a bad rap for being unhealthy, but when you look at the ingredients – bread, cheese, tomatoes – it’s not all that different from having a sandwich, which people generally don’t freak out about.

Top your pizza with veggies and eat a big old salad alongside it (I love this Vegetarian Caesar Salad with Kale) and I think that makes for a mighty fine meal.
