1. How long can you reasonably use a set of monthly contact lenses if you're not wearing them daily? Asking for a friend...
2. I haven't yelled in six days. Six whole days. This is pretty major because I'm not someone who has much of a filter in the first place, and parenting a threenager has really brought out my shouty side. Last week this article about how Inuit parents teach their children to control their anger popped up in my Facebook feed, and reading it, coupled with hearing my exact tone of yelling coming out of my kid's mouth, made me realize that I'm not leading by example.
It also made me realize that shouting doesn't actually make him listen. It's like shouting to someone on the other side of a stadium at a rock concert; you're never going to get their attention. So I'm trying to find other ways. I'm also working on teaching him that freaking out and screaming is reserved for actual emergencies, so I've got to practice what I preach.
I'm not saying I'll never yell again. I surely will. But I'm trying a lot harder to not yell, and six days feels pretty major at this point.
3. I'm having a moment with Lambrusco right now. Just wanted you guys to know.
4. Still no progress on the bathroom. We're coming up on 4 months without a bathroom now, and I tell ya, sink baths, gym showers, and not having laundry is getting pretty old.
This whole thing is making me re-evaluate my stance on living in the city (and therefore in an apartment) versus moving out into the suburbs into a house. I love living in the city, and in particular in our neighbourhood. I don't want to have to buy a car, I don't want to be responsible for a roof, and I don't particularly want to mow a lawn.
Still, I'm acutely aware that if this had happened in a house, we'd have had the bathroom repaired and reinstalled months ago. Since we own our apartment but the building technically owns the walls and pipes, we've had very little control over this process, from when the work is done to who the contractor is. And I'm so over it all.
ON HEY NUTRITION LADY THIS WEEK
This week I wrote about how much I hate breastfeeding, and this article struck a nerve - in a good way! I've had so many emails, DMs, and comments from other women who also hated breastfeeding. I think that disliking or struggling with breastfeeding is one of those things that happens a lot, but not that many people talk about it. So let's talk about it!
I also resurrected one of the OG recipes on this site, No Sugar Banana Bran Muffins. I first posted this recipe back in 2010, and it's one of the first recipes that I truly developed from scratch. If you haven't tried these date-sweetened beauties before, now's the time! {Pin this}
WHAT’S TRENDING ON HNL
If you’ve been here for a while you’ve probably noticed that the top five posts are pretty much always the same. We all know that Mung Bean and Coconut Curry basically always has the top spot, and that everyone loves Black Bean and Quinoa Freezer Burritos (they’re so loveable though!) So let’s switch things up!
Instead of the top five posts each week, I’ll be pulling from the top 10-15 and showcasing recipes and posts that are doing well, but might need a little nudge. Cool?
Here’s what’s trending this week:
1. Chia Fresca. Such a fun and hydrating way to take chia seeds! {Pin this}
2. Vegetarian freezer meals for new moms. There are 37 recipes in this roundup, so much good stuff! {Pin this}
3. Lentil Shepherd's Pie. This pie contains no actual shepherds, just so you know. {Pin this}
4. Tempeh Bolognese. I'm making a batch for the freezer this week! {Pin this}
5. 20 Vegetarian Lunch Box Ideas. Yes! Pack your lunch! {Pin this}
WHAT’S GOOD AROUND THE WEB
1. Did dietary changes bring us F-words?
2. When choosing what to eat, it's best to go green.
3. Nooooo, not avocados!
4. Duh --> Higher consumption of sugary beverages linked to increase risk of mortality.
5. Kraft Heinz can't count on ketchup to save it from the future of food.

Lambrusco is religion.

Hey Katie, love this post. My boy is now a man, and I didn't have access to the internet to help me - and I yelled a lot - way too much. It's my only regret about my parenting, that I didn't figure out how to control my stress and my frustration (because it was those things, not anger, making me yell). Somehow your post has made me feel less of a horrible person. On the upside, I have a (man)child who loves me now, despite my less than perfect parenting 😉 He felt loved, despite the frequent yelling. So, don't stress! I hope you get your bathroom sorted soon - that does sound like a living hell! If Lambrusco is your crutch, well it's cheap and like drinking water, what's not to like. And, beans on toast, top meal!!!
