Happy Father's day to all the poppas out there!!! I hope you're having fabulous days and are on the receiving end of some well deserved pampering.
This is another kind of funky week for the meal plan. It's a short work week (only 3.5 days) and my thesis supervisor is taking me out for a celebratory lunch on Wednesday so I only need to pack 2 lunches. I've got an excessive amount of carrots in the fridge so I'm going to make this carrot and quinoa salad and pack it along side some hummus for protein. On Thursday we're off to Istanbul for a long weekend!!! The airline we're flying with doesn't provide lunch (and who wants airplane food anyways?) so I'm going to make some travel wraps with leftover carrot salad and hummus. Yum! The rest of the week and the weekend will be all Turkish all the time! Woot!!!
1. What's healthier, almond milk or soy milk? This infographic is a good comparison. (Pssst - have you tried making your own almond milk yet?)
2. What causes weight gain? This is a great great great piece by Mark Bittman. It's like he's speaking words out of my own mouth.
3. This is awesome! Food that magically regrows its self.
4. 12 surprising foods with more sugar than a Krispy Kreme donut.
5. Healthy diet? Why plants outgrow all other trends. Eat plants, yo!

The drinks piece was a bit of a shocker! Useful on a night out for a teetotal girl (me) x

Which article are you referring to, Deena?

Oh my gosh such good links this week!! I sent the re-growing foods one to my roommate (who loves gardening) and the slide of the yoplait yogurt in the sugar/doughnut presentation to Erik, who buys that stuff regularly. The gardening one was super helpful because I've been trying to regrow some organic celery I bought in some water, but I didn't know that you have to plant it in soil once it starts sprouting! I want to try all of those! I also loved the infographic of soy vs. almond milk since I drink almond milk anyway. And Mark Bittman is, as always, great.
You have such a fun week/weekend ahead!!!!!! I want to hear/see all about Istanbul!! So jealous you get to eat authentic Turkish food. One of my favorite restaurants in Houston is called Istanbul Grill! 🙂

I did like the donut comparison, but it is a bit limited since it only looks at sugar and doesn't take into account, say, protein that would be in the yoghurt or fiber that would be in the tomato sauce. But in general there is waaaaay too much added sugar in our food, so yeah, ditch the sweetened yoghurt and just get the plain stuff!
I still prefer soy to almond milk for the texture and flavour, but there are clearly benefits and drawbacks to both. I thought it was a well balanced comparison.
And yeah, can't wait for Istanbul! Follow along on Istagram, obvs!

Mark Bittman makes me realize we all have our demons. Processed and sweet foods, as it happens, are not mine. I consider my self 'lucky' in this regard. Sadly, I am confronted with some others, like, not enough serious activity and a slowing metabolism, and ...the weight goes on...
The doughnut equations were a good laugh! Not funny, I know.

Indeed we do. I am also lucky in that regard, but I've got others... hello wine, bread, and cheese! Everything in moderation. I also thought the donut comparison was good - very eye opening. Of course it doesn't take into consideration the fiber and other nutrients that offset sugar in some of those foods, but some are pure garbage.
