It's that time of year. Lunches out, which mean not only a richer lunch than I'd ordinarily have, but also that I miss my lunch hour swim. I'm trying to stay balanced by keeping other meals on the light side, and I've gone super green with my morning smoothies. It occurred to me this morning that a super green 'take a breather from holiday eating' smoothie recipe is something you might like? Ask and ye shall receive.
I'm also eating down the freezer a bit, so I've got strata and freezer burritos on the menu this week. The freezer burritos may also be these wraps, filled with roasted butternut squash instead of carrot, as they are indistinguishable from the burritos in my freezer. I really should start labelling things.
1. Prescribing vegetables, not pills. Hurrah.
2. Is the Food Babe a fear monger? Scientists are speaking out. I'm so glad they are.
3. I hate to burst your pepperminty holiday drink bubble, but a Starbucks peppermint mocha has as much sugar as 13.5 mini candy canes.
4. It turns out that the time of day you eat might actually make a difference.
5. Another reason to include more turmeric in your diet - as little as a gram per day could boost memory.

Food Babe should probably take the time to get some legitimate education in nutrition or at least food science before she does anymore "investigations". How are you gonna investigate something you don't have a true understanding of? And the really unfortunate part is that I don't think most of her followers are aware of actual ignorance in the field. I'm sure she knows they view her as an "expert", which seems to a bit on the deceitful side...

I know, right? She's even given a lecture at a university, which is totally crazy. What university administrator in their right mind invites someone without education to lecture? And someone who frequently misinterprets scientific data and uses it for fear-mongering and self promotion. Makes me crazy!

Yes- I would love another smoothie recipe!
And thanks for your 'eating down the freezer' reminder. Scarey place in there.
This is the first time I am seeing your strata recipe. (where was I in Oct?) but that will be a weekend goal, for sure.
Love when your posts pop up in my screen, Katie!

Thanks Susan! I'll see if I can find a day with enough light to photograph one more smoothie this year. If not, a New Years reset-button smoothie it will be.

I really look forward to your Friday posts Katie! My husband and I had a discussion about GMO food last night. He is a science guy and was trying to explain to me that the pesticides in GMO corn is in the roots, not the actual corn. The worms that destroy the crops eat the roots, so the GMO corn saves the crops, but doesn't harm us. What is your opinion on GMOs?
I used to like the Food Babe, now I find her annoying. Great article!
So exciting to read about Turmeric and working memory. Do you think it's smart (no pun intended) to take a turmeric supplement everyday? I read that turmeric can increase estrogen, which may increase a woman's chances of breast cancer. Can't remember where I read that, and I hope it's just bad science or reporting.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with GMOs, after all they're a sign of science and progress and development. BUT! I DO strongly believe that people have a right to know what they're eating and make an informed choice as to whether or not they choose to buy GMO crops. That big companies like Montsanto have invested billions of dollars in ensuring GMO labelling doesn't pass is, I think, more than a bit frightening. And the other tactics of these companies, like patenting their seeds and suing farmers when the wind blows them down and they happen to take seed on a different farm. Or creating terminator seeds that force farmers to buy new seeds year after year rather than the age old practice of saving seeds from one season to the next. So from a nutritional perspective I don't think that GMOs are a big deal, but from an ethical perspective I do.
I haven't read anything about a link between turmeric consumption and estrogen, but I'll look into it!
