I’m loving how our days are getting longer now! Summer is still a long way away, but afternoon sunsets like this are pretty spectacular nevertheless.

What’s good around the web is a weekly series where I share some of what I’ve been reading around the web. Each week I post links to five nutrition related articles, good recipes, and just general good reads. I hope you enjoy it! Also: Gin and Jam! I’m so into this! I’ve been skipping the simple syrup as I think the jam sweetens the drink plenty on it’s own. I’m loving different gin / jam combinations.

    I’m actually pro fasting days. Maybe not in the vein of starving yourself one day then eating mindlessly the next, but that a little bit of deprivation here and there resets my mental urge to eat, eat mindlessly and eat junk food. After a 500 calorie day, a toasted peanut butter and banana sandwich feels like a little treat instead of, well, chocolate, cookies, candy etc. Furthermore, eating a little less than required one or two days reminds me that a little hunger isn’t the same as starvation. Heck, it reminds me what hunger even feels like (I bet a lot of North Americans do t actually feel hunger very often!).

      I can appreciate that point of view. My problem with the 5:2 diet (and other versions of this fasting program) is that people generally DO starve themselves one day then eat mindlessly the next. I do a sort of reverse version where I eat as leanly as possible for 5 days a week, then have treat days 2 days a week.

    THE GIN AND JAM. Ahhh so good. I don’t know why I’ve never thought of this at home! There’s a (really expensive) bar in Houston where I had this amazing drink with elderberry jam or something and it was just mind-boggling. Going to try this!!

    Also I like your diet philosophy ^. That’s pretty much what I try to follow as well. I’ve tried fasting (the 8 or 10-hour window one, can’t remember) and it just drove me nuts. I was always starving in the morning and tended to binge before I had to stop eating. Everything in moderation 🙂

    I watched a program on the intermittent fasting diet. MM observed that people tended not to overeat on the ‘eat what you like’ days. When MM followed the diet himself, he felt he had a little bit less energy overall, but he felt good. (I was really struck by the single comment which followed the article regarding religious fasting.) I personally can embrace a bit of hunger, and could have a food rest the odd day. A low calorie diet, 24/7, is much less appealing to me. No one size fits all.
