We've had a pretty mild autumn so far, although there is snow and a pretty significant drop in temperatures forecasted for the end of the upcoming week. But man oh man, it is dark out. I've adopted the Swedish way of dealing with it: lamps in the windows, candles on basically every available surface.
What’s good around the web is a weekly series where I share some of what I’ve been reading around the web. Each week I’ll be posting links to five nutrition related articles, good recipes, and just general good reads. I hope you enjoy it! If you’ve got at article or recipe you’d like to see featured, please email me.
1. I get asked a lot about Omega-3 supplements, so I was happy to stumble across this article which clearly explains the different types available on the market and the benefits or drawbacks of each.
2. Here's some new research linking black tea consumption to a lowered risk of type 2 diabetes. This is good news for me, I'm a total black tea junkie.
3. You've probably heard that Hostess has liquidated, and therefore the beloved Twinkie is becoming extinct. I'm not exactly sad about the loss of junkfood (and I'm pretty sure it won't truly be going away), but do feel for those 18,500 people who are out of jobs. Nevertheless, this is an interesting piece on honouring the Twinkie.
4. Good nutrition goes beyond preventing simple deficiencies. Interesting read on magnesium, cacao, and your genes.
5. Do you think about how you talk to your kids about food? Ten food statements you should never make.

thanks for continuing this sunday "tradition" for i as someone else mentioned always learn at least one thing and typically more that from the links. i was especially interested in the omega-3 one this week as my doctor recommended i supplement. However, she was strongly pushing a fish based one which doesn't appeal to me at all being a vegetarian. so i'm certainly going to be looking into the algal product.

I know what you mean - as a vegetarian the idea of 'fish burps' is extremely unappealing. I didn't realize that algal oil was an option! Like I said in a previous comment, I'm more inclined towards a whole foods approach to getting all essential nutrients, but it's nice to know that supplementation is an option if it ever becomes necessary.

Re the omega 3 issue. A recent study ( I can't remember the exact source) suggested that omega 3 supplementation does not show any cardiovascular protection. It seems that ,as often is the case, eating the whole food which contains the nutrient in its original package is the better way to go.

I agree, which is why I don't take supplements - other than Vitamin D (super important in Sweden!) and a women's multivitamin for the folate.

I love this continuing feature/public service of yours. I click on most of the links and almost always learn something new. So thanks! BTW, when recently in the US my daughter asked about Twinkies, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy a box. Almost wished I had as I hear they are selling for huge sums on auction sites!

Thanks Kellie! I'm really glad you like it. Isn't it bonkers how much twinkies are selling for now?!
