This is what my bike ride home looked like on my late nights this week. That's all I have to say about that.
What’s good around the web is a weekly series where I share some of what I’ve been reading around the web. Each week I’ll be posting links to five nutrition related articles, good recipes, and just general good reads. I hope you enjoy it!
If you’ve got at article or recipe you’d like to see featured, please email me.
What’s good around the web?
1. Are healthy foods really more expensive? Not necessarily, according to this USDA study.
2. The first local asparagus of the year just hit my neighbourhood markets. This sandwich is happening.
3. Five myths about every day foods.
4. All about oats!

Interesting about agave... How do you feel about honey?
I think fruit juice is a tad demonized. I love it usually diluted with some water. I feel like it's more hydrating than regular water on a hot day. Plus I totally allow it for my children.

I feel just fine about honey, so long as it is locally and ethically sourced. The thing that is interesting to me about agave isn't the glucose / sucrose ratio (though that is troubling) as much as the processing it goes through to get it to that stage. I think most people think an agave plant is lovingly squeezed to get the nectar out, much like if you cut a stalk of aloe vera. Not the case, unfortunately. I did buy a small bottle of agave some time ago for a recipe, but I've made the same recipe (it only calls for 1 tbsp) using honey many times with no notable difference. I'll use it up, but probably won't replace it. I prefer my agave in tequila, thanks.
As far as fruit juice, I don't think it's demonized, rather I think it is often misunderstood. Many people look at fruit juice as an alternative to sugary drinks without realizing that fruit juice IS a sugary drink which has far fewer of the benefits of eating fruit (ie dietary fiber). I enjoy a large glass of water with a splash of fruit juice in it, straight up juice is just too much for me. But everything in moderation, right?

I do get that, but for me it's about the quality of the sugar. Unsweetened apple juice and coke may have, ml for ml, the same amount of sugar, but I can't possibly wrap my head around them being comparable in any way other than calories.

I totally agree, I don't think you can begin to compare coke and natural fruit juice, and fruit juice is for sure a better choice. Not all fruit juice is created equal, though, many are loaded with the same HFCS as sodas are (we used to use Five Alive in the first aid room at work for hypoglycemic episodes because it had so dang much sugar in it). Water with a splash of juice would be an even better choice than that. Bottom line, eat (and drink) real food, and everything in moderation 🙂

Thanks for the five myths. Reminds me of the advice, everything in moderation. I do love eggs and avocados.

Me too! Two of my favourite things.
