Well February has whizzed by, hasn’t it’? Maybe because it’s my last month of maternity leave, perhaps because my baby turns one tomorrow, maybe because it’s a short month as it is. But dang, I blinked and it’s gone.
This weekend I’ll be rolling up my sleeves and packing lunches for the first time in a little over a year. I’m excited about getting back to work; there have been some big changes at the company I work for and I’m looking forward to seeing how I fit in. I’m looking forward to putting on nice clothes that don’t get instantly covered in baby grime, having adult conversations, reading emails to completion and perhaps even replying to them. I’m looking forward to using my brain again and having a whole eight-hour work day to get things done, rather than trying to fit in as much as possible while the baby naps, however fleeting that might be. But, leaving my baby, gah. That kills me. He took his first steps the other day, and it made me realize how much I’m going to miss out on while I’m at work. But, I’m sure we’ll find a new rhythm soon enough, and I have no doubt that he and Paul will have the most fantastic time together over the next six months. It’ll be fine, right?

A good friend of mine lost her father suddenly and unexpectedly over the holidays to a heart attack, so my February donation was a made in his memory to the American Heart Association. It took me back a bit to the many years I spent as a CPR and First Aid Instructor through a similar agency – is your CPR up to date?
I was also inspired by this post on Annie’s Eats. As Annie says, “Now more than ever we must seek truth and transparency and just as importantly, show our tangible support to those asking the tough questions, doing the deep investigative work, and practicing responsible journalism. To this end, I urge you to purchase paying subscriptions to those media outlets providing high quality reporting.”
This made me realize that I haven’t actually paid for the news in years, and I’m sure I’m not alone. So I’ve decided to get a paying subscription to the New York Times, and possibly also The Guardian. Even if I never read a single article (I surely will) I at least will know my money is supporting those who are fighting the good fight against “alternative facts.”

There are so many good recipes out there, it’s so hard to choose just a few to share, but here are three that stopped me in my tracks and wouldn’t get out of my mind until I made them. Although they’re very different recipes, simplicity is a common theme. Each of these are made with only a handful of ingredients and minimal effort, and are definitely worthy of going into regular rotation.
Would you just look at that Sesame Sriracha Tofu from Connoisseurus Veg? Srsly, get out of that bowl and into my face! I never would have thought of using tahini in an Asian influenced recipe like that, but it works so well. Try it!

I love making homemade pizza, and when I saw this Broccoli Pizza from Smitten Kitchen I immediately pitched a Friday pizza night so I could make it. Funky pizza toppings are totally my jam, and I’ve got a few white pizzas in my arsenal, but I’ve never used a garlic bechamel sauce before. That, plus the delicious spicy lemony broccoli, oh my! I used my go-to pizza crust and baked the pizzas on my baking steel and they were fantastic. (<– that’s not an affiliate link, I just really love my baking steel)
